UEMS  - 50th Anniversary - History:
Following the founding of UEMS in 1958, individual sections representing the various medical specialties were formed under the umbrella of the UEMS in 1962. These sections included a specialty Section devoted to Laboratory Medicine.
In 1998 Anatomical Pathology was split off and formed its own Specialist Section.
The remaining Specialist Section was renamed Medical Biopathology. At a meeting in Brussels in 1992 it was recognized that Medical Biopathology consisted of five major specialties: Polyvalent Medical Biopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Haematology & Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Immunology.
Since the start of this new Section, the number participating members has steadily grown with the number of countries joining the European Union. Read more >>
